KRDO has reported that Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) is extending a helping hand to its customers by providing payment assistance, along with rebates and energy-saving suggestions to alleviate the burden of higher heating bills during the winter season.
Starting on November 1, eligible customers can apply for the Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP). This program, as per CSU, is federally funded and specifically tailored to assist low-income households in covering their winter home heating expenses. To apply for LEAP, individuals can contact the Pikes Peak United Way at 2-1-1.
In addition to financial aid, CSU also offers valuable energy-saving recommendations to help consumers better manage their utility bills during the colder months:
-
Ceiling Fan Rotation: During the winter, ceiling fans should be set to rotate clockwise to help circulate warm air throughout the room.
-
Sealing Leaks: Apply caulk or weatherstripping around windows and doors to seal any gaps and prevent warm air from escaping and cold air from seeping in. It's important to note that caulking should be applied when the temperature is above 45 degrees.
-
Sunlight Utilization: Open curtains on south-facing windows during the day to harness the natural heat of sunlight, and close them at night to insulate against the cold.
-
Fireplace Management: Keep the fireplace damper closed when a fire is not burning to avoid heat loss.
-
Furnace Maintenance: Regularly check the furnace filter and replace it when it becomes dirty. A clean filter enables the furnace to operate more efficiently.
-
Thermostat Adjustment: Set the thermostat to a lower temperature during the night or when you're away from home. Additionally, CSU offers a $50 rebate on smart thermostats, encouraging energy-efficient heating control.
CSU's commitment to assisting its customers in navigating the challenges of winter utility bills is underscored by these initiatives, offering both financial support and practical advice to ensure homes stay warm and energy bills stay manageable.
